The Importance of Breastfeeding
Deciding how to
feed their baby is one of the most important decisions that new
WIC parents will make. The NYS WIC program promotes
breastfeeding as the first and preferred method for feeding
infants and helps breastfeeding moms by providing additional
foods and access to a wealth of breastfeeding information and
support.
WIC local agencies are
charged with doing whatever they can to encourage breastfeeding.
Every agency has a Breastfeeding Coordinator and Breastfeeding
Peer Counselors who provide breastfeeding support services to
women at convenient times and locations. Some WIC agencies even
have breast pumps to loan or give to breastfeeding mothers.
For you, the first step that you can take
toward supporting breastfeeding moms is educating yourself. The
NYS WIC Training Center offers a variety of training programs
that focus on breastfeeding support and education. |
