Implementing Evidence-Based Practices: Quick Start
Speaker: Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mount Sinai Medical School

Historically, women have been instructed to postpone starting hormonal contraceptives until the next menses.  However, research has revealed that most women can safely begin taking hormonal contraception (and even be provided an IUD) on the same day of their clinic visit, without having undergone a Pap smear, and at any point in the menstrual cycle (Quick Start method).  This webinar will review evidence-based protocols and practices to support the design and delivery of reproductive health services to female family planning users that will facilitate enhanced access to contraception, streamlined clinical processes and enhanced patient outcomes.

Using New Media as Effective Communication Tools for Patient Recruitment and Retention
Speakers: Rebecca Brookes
President, Upstream Social Marketing LLC
and Janelle Hutchinson
Health Educator, Oswego County Opportunities, Inc.

The overwhelming majority of adolescents, as well as women ages 20-29, are completely “plugged in” to new media. These young women use online tools like Facebook, texting, blogs, Twitter, YouTube, and podcasting to educate themselves and make decisions, to purchase, and to communicate with one another. Yet many family planning organizations do not take advantage of the opportunities of new media, either as tools to interest and recruit new patients, or as methods of effective communication with existing patients.

This webinar will provide a brief overview of new media as well as concrete examples of how health providers use these tools to communicate, educate, and encourage use of services with their audiences.

Title X Program Diagnostic Tool
Speaker: Dawn Middleton, Project Director
Cicatelli Associates Inc.

In an environment of limited resources, conducting an evaluation of core areas of program operations to assess opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Title X health service delivery structures becomes essential.

This webinar will review the use and application of a simple self administered diagnostic tool designed to support Title X programs in examining patterns of staff utilization and productivity, evaluate health center capacity as compared to demand for services and assess opportunities to enhance fiscal sustainability of program operations. Webinar proceedings will include Title X program staff sharing their experiences and findings from utilizing the diagnostic tool to assess program operations and utilize findings to identify areas for improvement.

Implementing Evidence-Based Practices: Pap Smears
Speaker: Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mount Sinai Medical School

The practice of annual Pap smear examination is largely a historical phenomenon. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) support the newly revised evidence-based guidelines regarding initiation of cervical screening as well as frequency of subsequent screening. Most cases of cervical cancer occur in women who are not screened adequately, as opposed to infrequently. Unnecessary screening of average women can have adverse economic, emotional, and future childbearing implications. This webinar will investigate the trend of decreasing the frequency of Pap smear exams and moving the baseline screening to 3 years of the start of sexual activity or age 21, whichever comes first.

Addressing Reproductive Health Inequities
Compelling evidence indicate that race and ethnicity correlate with persistent and often increasing health disparities among the U.S. population. Promoting health equities will require new knowledge about determinants of disease, causes of health disparities, and effective interventions for prevention and treatment. This webinar is intended to increase participant awareness about reproductive healthcare disparities and support Title X providers in considering ways to promote health equities within their clinic setting.
