Engaging Decision Makers Part 2

Funded contractors in NYTCP must work with a variety of decision makers in order to mobilize the community to change social norms regarding tobacco use and to adopt and implement policies that will support this effort.  This second level training on Engaging Decision Makers will focus on the particular skills needed to engage a specific decision maker and how to utilize the decision maker’s interests and concerns to capitalize on the meeting or interaction.  Each training will include a consultant/trainer who represents the specific decision maker group in order to gain perspective and skills in engaging this group.  The one-day trainings will focus on one of the following decision makers: Community Based Organizations (CBOs); MD Office/Clinic Managers; School Administrators, and Tobacco Retailers.

As a result of this training participants will be able to:

  • Examine all of the influencing factors regarding their targeted decision maker;
  • Identify key issues important to this decision making group;
  • Practice engaging the decision maker towards policy work;
  • Demonstrate skills in articulating policy change initiatives to the decision maker.

Contractors are required to attend one of these trainings depending on their modality as listed below:

Cessation Centers – MD Office/Clinic Manager training

Community Partnerships – Tobacco Retailer or CBO Director/Officer training

Reality Check – Tobacco Retailer training

School Policy – School Administrator training

Bringing Partners to the Table – Part 2Tobacco control activities throughout New York State are a combination of efforts of funded contractors and community members and organizations who embrace the goal of a tobacco free New York.  This second level training on Bringing Partners to the Table will focus on how funded contractors can make best use of members of their committees and short term action groups, with a particular emphasis on facilitation skills in accomplishing shared planning, joint conflict resolution and problem solving, and consensus building.

This training is required for all contractors.

Social Marketing –  In this one-day training we will take a look at how to develop easy, fun and popular messages for your target audiences – whether it be getting tobacco out of retail stores, or getting doctors to do the 5As.  Rebecca Brookes will be back with us to deliver these trainings.

This training is optional for all contractors.
