MODULE 1
– The Foundation: Integrating Tobacco
Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services
This ½ day workshop is designed for
administrators, directors, clinical supervisors, counselors,
prevention professionals, nurses, physicians, and support staff.
The workshop will provide a common core of knowledge about tobacco
use and tobacco dependence. The workshop will explore participant
attitudes and beliefs about tobacco use and dependence, the history
of treatment for tobacco dependence, rationale of addressing tobacco
use and dependence in addiction services, and will review the
requirements of OASAS Regulation Part 856. This module provides the
foundation knowledge for all other modules.

MODULE 2
– Assessment, Diagnosis, and Pharmacotherapy: Integrating Tobacco
Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services This
½ day workshop is designed for, counselors, clinical supervisors,
nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician assistants,
and other clinical staff. The workshop will introduce participants
to screening tools for tobacco use and dependence, and will address
assessment of change readiness, diagnostic criteria of tobacco
dependence, and withdrawal, and pharmacotherapy including nicotine
replacement therapy and non-nicotine medications.
Prerequisite: Module 1 - The Foundation.

MODULE 3
– Behavioral Interventions: Integrating Tobacco Use
Interventions Into Chemical Dependence Services
This full-day workshop is designed for counselors, clinical
supervisors, and other clinical staff who provide counseling or
therapy services. The skills building workshop will review stages of
change, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and
relapse prevention strategies for treating tobacco dependence.
Participants will also learn tobacco awareness engagement topics and
activities, and will practice through role-play, how to facilitate
psychoeducational tobacco awareness groups.
Prerequisite: Module 1 - The Foundation.

MODULE 4
- Treatment Planning: Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into
Chemical Dependence Services This
½ day workshop is designed for counselors, clinical supervisors and
other clinical staff who provide therapeutic and counseling
services. The workshop will review the knowledge and skills
clinicians need to provide effective tobacco dependence treatment.
Participants will practice writing a comprehensive treatment plan
integrating evidence-based tobacco use interventions. Participants
will role-play patients in a tobacco recovery group and learn how to
teach practical problem-solving, coping, and relapse prevention
skills.

MODULE 5
- Co-occurring Disorders and Other Special Populations:
Integrating Tobacco Use Interventions Into Chemical Dependence
Services This ½ day workshop is designed for
counselors, clinical supervisors and other clinical staff who
provide therapeutic and counseling services. The workshop will
address the challenges presented when treating co-occurring
substance use and mental health disorders, and other special
populations. Topics covered will include the neurobiology of mental
health and substance use disorders, evidence-based tobacco treatment
interventions, counseling strategies, and pharmacotherapy.
Participants will apply their new learning in a case study activity.
