National STD Prevention Conference

Recorded sessions and presentations from past conferences are available for download at the CDC's STD conference site. Conference delegates from academia, public health departments, nongovernmental organizations, the private health sector, and policy-related organizations are invited to explore current issues, share successes, ask and debate new questions, and seek answers that will advance STD prevention into the future.


Gonoccocal Isolate Surveillance Project (GISP)

Monitors trends in antimicrobial susceptibilities of strains of N. gonorrhoeae in the United States in order to establish a rational basis for the selection of gonococcal therapies. GISP is a collaborative project between selected sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinics, five regional laboratories, and CDC.


National Chlamydia Laboratory Committee (NCLC)
A branch of the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). Provides a forum for the laboratory subcommittees of the ten Regional Infertility Prevention Project Advisory Groups to discuss issues and concerns regarding chlamydia screening tests and to develop a common position acceptable to the Regions.


Association of Public Health Laboratories
Promotes the role of public health laboratories in support of national and global objectives as well as the policies and programs which assure continuous improvement in the quality of laboratory practices. Features sections such as advocacy, national conferences, education/training, global activities, and public health labs.


YRBSS: Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System

The YRBSS was developed in 1990 to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States. The national YRBS is conducted every two years during the spring semester and provides data representative of 9th through 12th grade students in public and private schools throughout the United States.

Agency for Health Care Quality and Research
The Agency for Health Care Quality and Research, the federal agency that sponsors the US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations on preventive services, has now listed appropriate preventive services for women and men on its website. Chlamydia screening of sexually active women 25 and under is included in the recommendations for women, in English. Sharing this information with your STD prevention partners can help increase awareness that Chlamydia screenings is recommended as a "mainstream" preventive service for American women, not a special service for a small subpopulation with unique risks. Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI)--The HIPAA Privacy Rule and Adolescents: Legal Questions and Clinical Challenges
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) HIPAA established national standards and requirements for electronic transmission of certain health care information. According to that law, IPP health care entities are impacted and must be compliant with the Transactions and Code Set Rules as of October 16, 2002, and compliant with the Privacy Rules as of April 14, 2003. This comment from the March/April, 2004 issue of AGI’s Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health offers a helpful summary of how HIPAA affects STD and family planning providers who care for adolescents.
