AIDS Institute Regional Training Center

CAI is a regional training center and center of expertise for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, reaching more than 1,300-1900 participants annually through more than 45-70 individual trainings. CAI offers a flexible menu of training programs, tailored to address needs identified by the AIDS institute, other regional training organizations, and HIV service providers.

With more than two decades of experience, CAI's Regional Training Center is recognized as a credible training resource in the field. We provide staff with opportunities to develop training skills and knowledge covering more than 45 different training topics (see calendar for current list of available topics).

These capacity-building opportunities help reduce the stigma around mental illness, increase the self-care capacity of people living with HIV, and increase the knowledge and understanding of people living with HIV and community providers regarding the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems. Through diverse capacity-building opportunities, people living with HIV and community providers have increased awareness of the importance of mental health to overall health and wellness.

AIDS Institute Trainings

Trainings build the knowledge and skills of advanced mental health providers on the latest advances in medical, behavioral and legal issues pertinent to HIV and mental health, including evidence-based practices. Training topics include advanced motivational interviewing; addressing the mental health needs of older adults living with HIV; personality disorders; and working with individuals who are triply diagnosed with HIV, mental health disorder, and substance abuse. Providers reached by these trainings include psychologists, social workers, counselors, therapists, psychiatric nurses and others. Regional networks of providers are developed and supported to increase networking among providers and to facilitate sharing of perspectives and best practices.

HIV and viral Hepatitis Series

Introduction to HIV, STIs and Viral Hepatitis

This one-day introductory training will prepare non-physician health and human services providers to address HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and viral hepatitis in an integrated, client-centered manner. The training will review the similarities and differences in transmission, screening, available treatments and needed support services for each of the diseases. Read More

HIV and Hepatitis C Co-Infection

This two hour webinar is for health and human service providers who work with people living with HIV and who need updated information about HIV/HCV coinfection in order to provide effective services to their clients.

More than 25% of people living with HIV in the United States are coinfected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Among people who acquired HIV as a result of injection drug use, the rates of HIV/HCV coinfection may be as high as 90%. HCV screening is recommended for all persons living with HIV. Read More

Integrating Screening for HCV and HIV

This one day training will prepare participants to offer integrated rapid screening for HIV and HCV in a community setting. It will provide basic information about hepatitis C transmission, epidemiology, spectrum of illness, diagnosis and treatment. By participating in the training, participants will learn how to deliver HIV and HCV pre and post test messages in a seamless, integrated fashion and will learn about referrals that are essential for people who test positive for HCV antibodies. It's Time: Introducing viral Hepatitis into your workplace.

As part of the National Virus Hepatitis Training Project, this two day training will support the overall efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the prevention, control and elimination of hepatitis viral infections in the Unites States by:
-Familiarizing providers working in settings that serve persons at high risk for viral hepatitis with basic information about viral hepatitis
-Provide providers working in substance use treatment programs, STD clinics, criminal justice settings and HIV/AIDS programs with tools and skills to integrate hepatitis prevention, education and counseling services into existing programs.
