Each
year, CAI conducts over 700 training programs for
agencies in New York City, New York State, and Federal
Region II (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the
U.S. Virgin Islands), as well as national and international
programs. In developing a training program, CAI works
closely with the agency, the funders, relevant field
experts, and training participants, as well as clients
who will receive services. Projects begin with a customized
needs assessment to |
|
- determine
the topic areas and priorities that must be covered in
training
- assess
the existing knowledge and expectations of the prospective
training participants, and
- pinpoint
the objectives of training.
In
addition to written surveys, CAI utilizes focus groups and
performance indicators or standards developed and monitored
by recognized professional sources to obtain relevant data
about training needs. CAI also conducts on-site visits and
observations to assesses first-hand the training needs of
agencies. This combination of input assists CAI to offer
relevant, client-centered training.

We
are in partnership with a variety of universities
and research projects in developing training curricula
and programs for translating research into practice,
these include: Mailman School of Public Health of
Columbia University, New York State Psychiatric Institute
HIV Center, University of Alabama, Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, and the Association of Substance
Abuse Providers of New York State. |
CAI has expertise in delivering professional training that
is dynamic, interactive, and respectful of participants,
and that incorporates the principles of adult learning.
In order to meet the various needs of providers who have
increasing workloads and decreasing time available for training,
CAI has recently been offering an increasing number of satellite
telecasts, trainings on CD-ROM, and on-line trainings.
CAI
Trainers
CAI's administrators, trainers, and consultants are a culturally
diverse group of experienced managers, physicians, nurses,
psychologists, social workers, and other health professionals.
All trainers have had front-line work experience in health
and human services and most have extensive experience working
with minority, poor, and underserved communities. As
trainers, CAI staff are recognized for being innovative,
having in-depth knowledge of technical areas, and having
a dynamic approach in building skills and competence in
trainees at every level of their respective professions.
They have extensive experience conducting train-the-trainer
and training programs, engaging providers, recruiting participation,
designing curricula, and developing training models that
are efficacious and adaptable by a broad cross-section of
local providers.
