HRSA funded this project to help Ryan White CARE Act programs develop their capacity to successfully involve Peer Advocates. The goal of the project was for Peer Advocates to work as valued members of HIV healthcare teams and thereby contribute to improvements in healthcare access, comprehensiveness, continuity, quality and cost. This three year project will end on August 31, 2008, and there are no more training programs before that time. If you have any questions, please contact Miriam Grill, 212-594-7741 ext. 215, or mgrill@cicatelli.org.

Overview

Each Peer Advocate offers unique perspectives and experiences that are generally complementary to healthcare teams. Well-trained and appropriately supervised Peer Advocates can help clients and healthcare teams effectively and efficiently address persistent issues in care management such as outreach and recruitment, intake and assessment, engagement and retention, treatment planning, care coordination and medication adherence. However, integrating Peer Advocates into HIV healthcare teams can be challenging without proper training and follow-up assistance for key personnel responsible for implementing and sustaining Peer Advocate capacities.

This three-year national project provided national training and technical assistance to Peer Advocates, Peer Supervisors and Clinic Managers. The training and technical assistance covered strategies and skills needed to build multi-disciplinary teams that include Peer Advocates as essential members. Agencies that received free training and technical assistance committed to the following:

  • Sponsoring travel, accommodations and per diem for Peer Advocates, Peer Supervisors and Clinic Managers so they may participate in the training program
  • Participating in all project-related technical assistance activities
  • Participating in all pre- and post-training/technical assistance evaluation activities
The end product of this project is a Promising Practices Report based on the experiences of participating agencies and the project evaluation. All participating agencies are listed as contributors to promising practice materials and are acknowledged in all presentations made.
