2008 Training Faculty
David Bell is Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Populations and Family Health at Columbia University Medical Center and Medical Director of the Young Men's Clinic and the School-based Clinic Program, which are components of Columbia University's Center for Community Health and Education, Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Bell has focused on Male Health, particularly male sexual and reproductive health, and is an Adolescent Medicine Specialist. He received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX, his MPH from the University of California, Berkeley and completed a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at the University of California. Dr. Bell has served as a consultant for The Guttmacher Institute and the Kaiser Family Foundation. He has been an advocate for male sexual and reproductive health services in the New York Times, on MTV, BET and the CBS Sunday Morning News. Rick Brown is the Director of the Family Life Council of Greater Greensboro’s nationally recognized "Wise Guys" Program. Under his leadership the program has grown from a local service for teen males, parents and educators in Guilford County, NC to a national resource currently implemented in over 300 communities in 32 states, nationwide. Mr. Brown conducts trainings for professionals around the country on implementing the "Wise Guys" Program and workshops on topics regarding males and sexuality. His recent projects include the development and implementation of the "New Wise Guys: The Next Level Program for Adult Men." Mr. Brown has been recognized by the North Carolina Jaycees as one of five outstanding young North Carolinians and also received the WFMY TV2/Gannett Foundation’s Dare to Care award. He held the Executive Director’s position of High Point, North Carolina’s Big Brothers/Big Sisters Agency for 12 years. Mr. Brown has a BA in Sociology from High Point University and 25 years of professional experience working with adolescents. Hector J. Campos is CEO of Campos Training & Consulting Group. Mr. Campos has 22 years of experience working in the field of Male Involvement, Fatherhood Development, Sexuality Education and Cultural Diversity. He is a nationally recognized trainer and keynote speaker and has provided training and technical assistance in Mexico, the Caribbean and South Pacific Islands. For twelve years he was a Project Coordinator/Training Specialist at ETR Associates where he provided training and technical assistance to 25 Male Involvement and Fatherhood Projects funded by the California Department of Health and Human Services. In 1984, he developed and coordinated the first Male Involvement Program and initiated The Young Fathers Support Group for Planned Parenthood of San Antonio, TX. Mr. Campos has written curricula, training guides, and educational materials for the Center for Health Training, Population Services International, Engender Health, and the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research at the University of Texas, Houston Health Science Center. Mr. Campos attended the University of Texas at San Antonio and is currently completing a BS/MS in Psychology at California Coast University in Santa Ana, California. Joan Mogul Garrity is an independent trainer, consultant and writer with a focus on counseling and communication skills, sexuality, reproductive health, substance use, adolescent issues, and HIV/ AIDS. She has spent her professional life nurturing the abilities of providers - from the recovering addict doing street outreach to the clinic counselor, social worker, teacher, nurse and physician. Ms. Garrity has held positions such as Director of Counseling for Planned Parenthood of Maryland and Director of Education and Training for the Center for Population Options – now known as Advocates for Youth. In addition to extensive training experience throughout the United States, she has provided training in Canada, the Philippines and the former Soviet Union. Ms. Garrity was the primary author of "HIV Prevention Counseling: A Training Program" developed for the CDC and co-authored five follow-on training curricula for the CDC on issues related to HIV prevention. Her most recent publications include: “Asking the Hard Questions: A Reproductive Health Providers’ Guide to Client Centered HIV Risk Assessment,” “Supporting Quality HIV Risk Assessment: A Guide for Reproductive Health Clinic Managers and Supervisors,” “Comprehensive HIV Risk Assessment," and "Building Skills in Sexual and Substance Use History Taking: A Provider Training Manual.” Ira SenGupta is Executive Director of the Cross Cultural Health Care Program and past director of the Cultural Competency Programs in Seattle, WA. She has developed and delivered more than 2,600 hours of training in cross cultural issues for health and social service providers nationally in the past year alone. Ms. SenGupta conducts major cultural competency intuitional assessments and serves as a consultant for the HRSA Managed Care Technical Assistance Center. Ms. SenGupta has led several community-based research projects and serves on the National Committee for Cultural Competence and the Committee for the Development of Cultural Competence Curriculum and Training Modules for Primary Care Physicians. Wayne V. Pawlowski is an independent consultant, trainer and clinical social worker based in the Washington, DC area, with over 20 years in sexuality education, reproductive heath and family planning. Mr. Pawlowski is a nationally and internationally recognized sexuality/reproductive health/family planning trainer and educator, having provided training in 49 of the 50 United States as well as in 13 nations. Previously, he was Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s first and only Director of Training. Prior to joining PPFA he served as Director of Training for Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. for ten years. Mr. Pawlowski has been recognized with such awards as the First annual “Educators Award” from the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (1995), and the Planned Parenthood “Mary Lee Tatum Award” (2004) and “Golden APPLE Award” (1993). He is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the District of Columbia, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), and is an AASECT (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists) Certified Sex Educator.
Pam Wilson
is an independent program consultant and trainer. She has developed and
led sexuality education and pregnancy prevention programs with youth of
all ages and with parents. Ms. Wilson has assisted organizations around
the country in the development of sexuality and family life education
programs for children, adolescents, and parents. A nationally known
trainer, Ms. Wilson conducts workshops on topics such as “Strategies for
Promoting Parent Child Connectedness,” “Communicating about Sexuality with
High Risk Youth,” and “Jump Start Your Group Facilitation Skills.” She has
managed a variety of national training initiatives and has served as staff
for the Thornfield Annual Workshop on Human Sexuality and NJ TISHE
(Teachers Institute for Sexual Health Education). Ms. Wilson has also
written or co-authored numerous curricula and other publications,
including: "Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Grades 7-9," "Juvee Sex
Ed: Sexuality Education for Adolescents in Juvenile Justice Facilities," "Fatherhood Development: A Curriculum for Young Fathers,"
"Teach & Talk: The
Subject is Sex," and "Making a Difference in the Lives of Youth." She is also
featured in the sexuality education videos "Raising Healthy Kids: Families
Talk About Sexual Health." Ms. Wilson received her Master's Degree in Social Work
from Catholic University in 1975. |
