The Core Training
This is the necessary first step. The Leadership Training Institute
requires that our Core Training be completed before you move on to any of
our other training programs. The Core is a three day course that will
introduce participants to community leadership issues for people living
with HIV/AIDS including:
-
History of PWA advocacy in New York State
-
Effective and knowledgeable leadership
-
Identity,
diversity and
disclosure issues
LTI believes that everyone has the potential to lead. This training helps
you identify your individual strengths and then use those strengths to
have a positive impact within the HIV/AIDS community.
The Core Training gives you the foundation. LTI offers workshops that will
help you grow to the next level in your leadership role. Choose one or
more trainings that speak to your strengths. You'll be developing
your skills and learning about new advocacy opportunities. Your personal
growth will lead to community growth.

Community Advisory Boards - What You Need to Know About Being a Member
(CAB Roles)
(2-Day Training)
Community advisory boards (CABs) are an important part of the HIV/AIDS
community. Individuals coming together to focus on an issue can make a
forceful statement. In this 2-day training you'll become better
acquainted with the essential types and functions of AIDS-related CABs.
You will explore what is required of you as a member and how to work
effectively in the group. Individuals do make a difference especially
when bringing their skills into a community advisory board setting.
CAB Leadership Skills
(2-Day Training)
Building on the work in Community Advisory Boards, this workshop
explores information and skills that enhance effective leadership on
CABs. Emphasis is on collaboration and working in teams, communication
and negotiation skills, and common structural elements that can help
groups work together. Note: due to limited availability, registration
for this training is only open to participants who have 1) completed
Community Advisory Boards (CAB Roles) and 2) are currently active members of an
advisory board.
Community
Planning — Understanding the Process
(2-Day Training)
Introduction to the Ryan White CARE Act and CDC HIV Prevention Planning
This training helps facilitate understanding of the purpose and the
structure of the Ryan White CARE Act and the HIV Prevention Community
Planning process. We will explore leadership opportunities within
both of these frameworks and how participants can best utilize their
strengths in community planning groups.
Presentation Skills
(2-Day Training)
Not
everyone is comfortable expressing ideas or opinions in a public forum.
It can be even harder when a presentation or speech may be involved.
Leaders must become comfortable with these aspects of their group
participation. That's what this training can help you accomplish. We
will arm you with the skills necessary to not only express your views
but to present information in ways that help you accomplish your goal.
Working
Effectively in Groups
(3-Day Training)
Dealing with group dynamics takes a great deal of training. Every
situation is different and new. But there are basic skills that can be
used to improve participation and make the environment a safe one in any
group. We will focus on positive group roles, what makes groups work
effectively and on dealing with difficult situations.
