CAI
International projects include New York Linking Information
Networking Knowledge (NY LINK), Leadership
Training for PLWHA, Caribbean
Regional Training on HIV/AIDS Prevention Leadership, and
Cuban
Center for Prevention of STI/HIV/AIDS.
New
York Linking Information Networking Knowledge (NY LINK)
The NY LINK is a
technology transfer and resource exchange project that joins together
people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and health care providers from the
Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and New York. So far over 200 representatives
from 18 countries have participated in the NY LINK, working together
with US-based counterparts to share and develop HIV/AIDS programmatic
strategies on risk reduction and behavior change, HIV counseling and
testing, leadership development of PLWHA, treatment and adherence, and
the development and maintenance of multidisciplinary teams to implement
these programs.
Multidisciplinary
teams, composed of at least a physician, a nurse and two PLWHA, participate
in training of trainer (TOT) programs to develop their capacity to develop
and implement training programs in-country. Multidisciplinary teams
also participate in a series of twinning activities during which physicians
and nurses are matched with HIV/AIDS clinical experts and PLWHA twin
with NYC community-based organizations, PLWHA networks and other community
leaders. As a result of these twinning activities, NY-based organizations
will gain new strategies and insights on improving their outreach and
services to immigrant populations and visitors will increase their capacity
to offer training programs in their home countries.
The NY LINK program
is supported by UNAIDS, UN Volunteers, the New York State Department
of Health AIDS Institute, the New York City Mayor's Office on AIDS Policy
Coordination, and New York Community Trust. top
Leadership
Training for PLWHA
Since 2001, CAI
has worked with Proyecto Acción SIDA de Centroamérica
(PASCA) of the Academy of Educational Development (AED) and the Red
Centroamericana de Personas que Viven con VIH/SIDA (REDCA), to conduct
a needs assessment and develop and deliver two TOT programs for PLWHA
from all seven Central American countries. The two programs, Advocacy
Leadership and Support Group Facilitation, were designed to build leadership
and facilitation skills, develop advocacy strategies, increase support
networks throughout Central America and empower PLWHA.
This project is
funded by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) through funding
by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). top
Caribbean
Regional Training on HIV/AIDS Prevention Leadership
CAI International
implemented two activities in the English-speaking Caribbean in 2002.
In April, the Jamaica Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (JN+) invited
CAI trainers to attend their annual conference and co-train the multidisciplinary
team curriculum.
In June 2002, CAI
developed and delivered a TOT in Jamaica with multidisciplinary teams
from six Caribbean countries (Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts &
Nevis, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago). The five-day program focused
on HIV issues relevant to women including mother to child transmission
(MTCT), and provided opportunities to share strategies and experiences
of health professionals and PLWHA working with women in these countries.
This project was
funded by Department of State Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs,
and UNAIDS. top
Cuban
Center for Prevention of STI/HIV/AIDS
Since April 2000,
CAI has worked with the STI/HIV/AIDS Prevention Centers (Centros de
Prevención de ITS/VIH/SIDA) in Cuba to develop and deliver a
series of training of trainers (TOT) programs for Cuban PLWHA, clinicians
and educators from all provinces. The program held in August 2002 involved
behavior change, HIV counseling and testing and the multidisciplinary
team approach. The most recent program, held in December 2002, focused
on HIV/AIDS treatment issues including cutting edge regimens, strategies
for adherence, nutrition and health maintenance.
This project is
funded through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Havana,
Cuba. CAI is working with its partners to develop additional activities
for early 2003. top
