Faith Based Organizations
Faith Based Organizations (FBOs) play a
major role in the fight against HIV/AIDS
particularly in Guyana. They are well-placed in the
community to engage in prevention efforts, address the reduction of
stigma and discrimination, and provide a supportive environment for
PLWHA. In Guyana three distinct religious groups: Muslims, Christians
and Hindus, make up the country and each plays a vital role in the
community. In order to address the role of FBOs in the fight against
HIV/AIDS, CAI has developed two distinct trainings specifically for
Muslim, Hindu and Christian FBOs on1) Stigma and Discrimination and,
2) Abstinence and Refusal Skills focusing on youth.
Faith-Based Response to Stigma
and Discrimination
To help FBOs respond to the
community’s need to reduce stigma and discrimination, CAI developed
a training with learner-centered
exercises for each of the 3 religious groups. The training focused
on the core values of compassion, judgment, and personal
responsibilities which are common themes amongst each group.
Participants were asked to utilize these core values to evaluate the
ways in which members of their religion are addressing the issues
and to develop their own understanding and plans of action for
addressing HIV/AIDS-related stigma.
Abstinence and Refusal Skills for
Muslim, Hindu and Christian FBOs Working with Youth
In
support of Guyana’s National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS which
emphasizes the adoption of risk elimination practices by youth,
CAI developed a training curriculum for GHARP Funded FBOs. This
program focuses on training educators to help youth develop skills
which will allow them delay the onset of sexual activity.
