Motivational Interviewing Goal: To teach multidisciplinary teams of providers to use an effective behavior change intervention with clients. Objectives: · Explore assumptions about giving advice to patients and why it is not effective in persuading people to change their behaviors. · Express the spirit of motivational interviewing when working with clients by paying attention to how they speak to patients. · Avoid typical “traps” providers fall into when discussing behavior change with clients. · Identify the key tasks in negotiating for behavior change. · Develop skills in assisting patients with behavior change by assessing readiness, exploring importance and building confidence. · Develop skills in helping clients develop goals, implement strategies and select targets for change. · Identify how to implement methods of behavior change in their workplace through strategic action planning.
