CAI’s International Division was officially established in 1999 and works in partnership with governmental, non-governmental (NGOs), and civil society organizations in a number of countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia with the objective of strengthening and building local capacity to respond to their most pressing health issues, in particular HIV/AIDS.  CAI International conducts our work in alliance and coordination with the Global Fund, UN agencies, USAID missions and other donors and international agencies to ensure that there is synergy and harmonization in the region and at the country level.

The success of CAI’s International programs is the result of our expertise in fostering and building upon existing knowledge with implementing-country leadership through training and technical assistance (TA). Our staff is a culturally diverse group of expert trainers, researchers, content experts, medical and behavioral health professionals, distance learning designers, and technical assistance specialists. We deliver expertise in applying adult education strategies and providing training-of-trainer (TOT) programs and TA that develop participant capacity to provide high quality services in areas such as:

  • Behavioral Health<
  • Health Care Policy and Administration
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Implementing Evidence-based Interventions
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Organizational Development
  • Primary Care
  • Reproductive Health
  • Trauma and Crisis Management
  • Women's Health
  • Working with Vulnerable and Hard-to-Reach Populations.

CAI International’s work in HIV/AIDS has an established track record of successfully building and strengthening the capacities of governmental agencies, NGOs, and other members of civil society to develop and implement programs and services and work with most at-risk populations to reduce the risk of HIV transmission; to increase the number of people being tested, accessing care, and receiving treatment; and to scale-up and strengthen HIV and referral services. Our approach to capacity building is a comprehensive and sustainable process that includes training, TOT and TA; focuses on implementation and service delivery; and emphasizes the importance of supervisory support. Our design and delivery of all training and capacity building activities are firmly grounded in adult learning theory. We use interactive and experiential learning activities that are culturally adapted to help contextualize learning, and we are particularly skilled in developing training exercises that facilitate research-to-practice.  We work with funders, providers, and clients in partnerships to ensure that our services are relevant and culturally sensitive, and to maximize impact and sustainability.

CAI also leads multi-sectoral approaches to HIV prevention, bringing private businesses, academic institutions, labor and public works, health ministries, and various other sectors together to coordinate and collaborate on projects. In addition to the work CAI conducts with the aforementioned sectors, CAI works directly with PLWHA on the development of several of its projects in order to create and implement programs that are appropriately reflective of the populations they intend to serve.

A core element of CAI’s international efforts is to foster a continuous flow of resources and expertise between PLWHA groups, clinicians, and other support service providers in developing countries and the United States.  CAI achieves this through the facilitation of technical support and exchange between individuals and organizations involved in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment in the U.S. and internationally.  We also support linkages between overseas PLWHA and clinicians with NY-based agencies and individuals to build partnerships, foster exchange of resources and information, and strengthen health and support services overseas and for immigrant communities in New York.
