CDC: Safer, healthier people Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Projects

CAI offers other programs related to Adolescence, HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, and Women's Health.

CAI works with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on various projects, including:

  • Diffusion of Evidence-Based Interventions (DEBIs) Project.  CAI’s Capacity Building Assistance (CBA) Youth Initiative is located within the Center for Evidence-Based Interventions (CEBI). It focuses on bringing expertise in the training and implementation of evidence-based HIV prevention interventions to CBOs serving high-risk youth, including racial and ethnic minority and LGBTQ youth. Our initial focus will be on DEBIs, in particular Street Smart, and TLC (Together Learning Choices), as it becomes available for diffusion. Our CBA program includes careful pre and post-training assessment to identify organizational strengths and barriers to implementing DEBIs with fidelity. Data collected serves as baseline information for adapting and tailoring the interventions to meet the unique needs of sub-populations at risk and for CBA addressing the adapting and tailoring process. We provide a program of individualized technical assistance to facilitate implementation of the DEBI, using various modalities including telephone, web-based “virtual classrooms” and chat rooms, face-to-face meetings and publications.

  • HIV Prevention Training Program. Targeted at family planning providers in Region II, this program aims to increase their skills and abilities to reduce the risky behavior of their clients through integrated and effective HIV prevention counseling strategies. The training manual will be translated into Spanish for staff in Puerto Rico and will be incorporated into an existing Peer Education Training Project, which is a joint project between the Virgin Islands department of Health, the University of the Virgin Islands, and CAI.

  • Pilot training program focusing on substance-using women. The emphasis of this program will be on homeless women, prisoners, parolees, and newly released inmates. A key component is to identify and train "peer navigators" who are themselves women with substance using histories for the purpose of assisting their peers in accessing and utilizing reproductive health services at family planning programs.

  • Patient Satisfaction Assessment Program (PSAP). With direction from two family planning grantees in New Jersey, this project will develop a model to measure the quality of integrated reproductive health and HIV prevention services. CAI will develop an implementation manual. The PSAP will be piloted in New York and in the Virgin Islands and translated into Spanish for a pilot in Puerto Rico.

  • Best Practices in Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. CAI will develop "Guidelines for Best Practices in Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention" based on the findings of a retreat for Title X family planning providers on this topic. CAI will then develop a training program for Title X delegates in Region II based on these guidelines that will teach information dissemination, program design, and evaluation.

  • Dissemination program for an existing and tested prenatal smoking cessation model (PSC). This program introduces the "5A's," an evidence-based method of intervention used by clinicians to identify pregnant smokers and provide them with support in trying to quit. Participants in a train-the-trainer program are provided with a training curriculum, a training videotape with video guide, a consumer videotape, and a CD containing PowerPoint slides for presentation and links to online resources—everything they need to train others in how to use the 5A's intervention with their pregnant clients. The training materials can be purchased from CAI by anyone not able to attend the train-the-trainer program.
