CAI is at the forefront in recognizing and addressing critical health care issues as they emerge and impact the delivery of HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services. In 1985, CAI was one of the first training centers in the region and nationally to begin offering HIV/AIDS counselor training programs. Since that time, CAI has worked closely with the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York/Virgin Islands AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC), and local and regional prevention planning councils and community based organizations to develop hundreds of training programs, curricula, training manuals, train-the-trainer programs, and policy and technical assistance interventions. Many of the training programs are offered at no cost to participants. In addition, our international division, CAI International, works to improve health care, support services and access to treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) internationally and those residing in the United States through training-of-trainers (TOT), capacity building, infrastructure development, and resource exchange.

In addition to our above-mentioned HIV programs, CAI has created intensive, five-day HIV clinical preceptorships for advanced practitioners. We collaborate with New York City Designated AIDS Centers in offering preceptorships in colposcopy, HIV primary care, HIV dentistry, and HIV mental health. Participants observe the treatment of actual patients with HIV disease and discuss their observations with faculty who have had many years experience in HIV care and research. These programs are especially useful in providing a richer, more realistic experience than participants could receive from reading or lectures. Participants also gain an ongoing professional connection with their faculty for continued consultation on difficult cases.
