The
Five Borough AIDS Mental Health Alliance (FAMHA)
CAI offers other programs related to Behavioral
Health and HIV/AIDS.

After seven outstanding
years, the FAMHA project, an educational project under the
leadership of Cicatelli Associates Inc. and funded by the
New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has
come to a close. Since 1998, FAMHA has brought to over
10,500 mental health and substance abuse treatment
professionals of New York City quality training and
technical assistance in over 200 topic areas related to HIV
and mental health. The project was ground breaking in its
objective of raising awareness to the critical connection
between physical and mental health needs of those with and
at risk for HIV/AIDS. In addition, in keeping with the
mission of CAI to serve minority populations, over 70% of
those trained were from communities of color, representing a
wide spectrum of professions including psychiatry, social
work, nursing, substance abuse counseling and case work.
Among the many successes
of the project were:
-
Over 500 programs
offered to 10,453 trained professionals
-
Six city-wide
conferences with themes addressing Co-Occurring Disorders,
Culturally Competent Treatment, Alternative and Holistic
Interventions and Evidence-Based Interventions
-
A quarterly
newsletter with national recognition due to its cutting
edge vision and authors addressing issues like the Crystal
Methamphetamine crisis, Pediatric AIDS Care, Working with
Criminal Justice Populations and HIV Education for Mental
Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Populations
-
Individualized
technical assistance offered to NYC contracted agencies to
better integrate knowledge and skill gained from training.
This included clinical team supervision with expertise in
psychopharmacology, dual disorders and chronic conditions
like addiction and homelessness
-
Symposiums
addressing recent treatment models like Contingency
Management and factors to be addressed in counseling
like Risk Reduction Burnout
CAI would like to thank
our funder, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene,
Division of Mental Health for this successful partnership,
as well as our conference partner YAI, The National
Institute of People with Disabilities. In addition, we
would like to thank our many trainers, writers and
consultants that have made this project a success in raising
awareness of the interrelationship between quality mental
healthcare and the physical care of those with or at risk
for HIV/AIDS. We look forward to future initiatives to
continue this important work and encourage you to continue
to enjoy the back issues of the FAMHA newsletter below.
