Community
Education
The
Division of Community Education focuses on developing the
skills of staff members in community-based projects so they
can work more effectively with the populations they serve.
Life experiences are coupled with skill-based training to
create a dynamic, culturally competent, and community-oriented
work force.
One
community education initiative is the Community Health Worker
(CHW) Program, a case management program with the goal of
providing services to pregnant and parenting women. CAI
trains Community Health Workers as para-professionals to
provide outreach, education and case management to high-risk
women within their communities. As a result of the training,
CHWs are able to:
-
Demonstrate skills in strength-based case management including
developing an assessment with client-centered goals
-
Develop the necessary skills to provide education and
referrals on substance use, HIV/Aids, Domestic Violence,
Early Intervention and other relevant topics
In
addition to direct training, CAI serves as a coordinating
center for community coalitions working to strengthen responses
to adolescent pregnancy, violence, HIV/AIDS, and other issues.
The Peer Training Institute (PTI), established in 1996,
is one such initiative. It is a collaboration of eight community-based
organizations, representing different populations and communities
affected by HIV/AIDS. The goal is to increase the supply
of trained, skilled, motivated, and culturally competent
HIV prevention peer educators. Serving as the lead agency,
CAI provides technical assistance, training, and job readiness
workshops to the collaborating agencies and other participating
organizations.
CAI
provides specialized peer-education training programs for
adult and adolescent community health workers, leaders,
and advocates. Programs focus on enhancing participants’
life skills, effectiveness as leaders, and ability to collaborate
with health and social service agencies.
