Description:

Perinatal Care for Vulnerable Populations was developed with the goal to improve birth outcomes, through the implementation of a more comprehensive model of health care designed to increase access and use of prenatal care by vulnerable women.

This web-based training was developed by Cicatelli Associates Inc. (CAI) and made possible through a grant from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute.

Price: There is no registration fee for this course. Please note, however, that a nominal fee is charged for continuing education credits, which are optional.  
Accreditation Statements: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through Cicatelli Associates Incorporated (CAI). CAI is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education to physicians.

Objectives:
  • Identify high risk women (i.e., women at risk for poor pregnancy outcome).
  • Describe the impact of specific issues on pregnancy outcome including: homelessness, immigration, adolescence, substance use, and mental health.
  • Outline appropriate interventions to address the specific issues.
  • List and be able to use appropriate screening tests for high risk women.
  • Describe the basics of pregnancy follow up and evaluation for high risk women, including antenatal surveillance designed to improve pregnancy outcome. Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) as a highly sensitive and specific method for detection of chlamydia.
  • Discover strategies to retain and support women in care after pregnancy.
  • Describe legal reporting responsibilities of provider.

Continuing Education This section provides information and forms necessary to obtain continuing education credits. There are two opportunities during the course to obtain continuing education credits. Once after the Prenatal Care module, and another time after the Legal Responsibilities module.
Course Overview
The course overview explains how to get around the course, outlines the course objectives and contents, describes the intended audience, and provides an estimate of the time to complete the entire course.
Vulnerable Women
This module describes vulnerable women, providing recent epidemiology statistics. It discusses the many issues vulnerable woman face, and provides information on how to address them.
Prenatal Care This module includes information clinicians need to provide comprehensive care for patients such as history taking, physical examination, labs (what and when), referrals, and medication.
Labor & Delivery This module involves medical management and pain management issues during labor and delivery.
Postpartum Care This module covers retaining and supporting the patient to ensure she stays in the healthcare system. It also covers the special postpartum needs of the HIV+ woman.
Legal Responsibilities This module describes legal reporting responsibilities and pivotal court cases that shaped the law. Please note, the content in this module is New York State specific. Please check with your state's health department for specific information relating to your state.
Case Study The case study is an opportunity to apply the information in this course to a realistic situation.

Communication Various communication tools allow participants to collaborate synchronously or a-synchronously, including discussion boards that are used as activities in the course.
