Substance Use Screening Tools

Community Health Workers are challenged with the task of assessing their clients' substance use and educating them about its adverse effect on birth outcomes. This webinar will introduce a substance use screening tool(s) that will assist Community Health Workers with assessing substance use (including alcohol) among their clients, to be utilized within the context of the home and other visiting opportunities.

Labor & Delivery: Preparing for Birth and Homecoming

Community Health Workers are challenged with the task of educating their clients about the unique process of planning for labor, delivery and homecoming of a newborn. Clients may need guidance and support in taking the proper steps to make this process run smoothly as this event impacts the entire family. A thorough understanding of the steps involved in labor and delivery can help CHWs to be supportive and provide accurate information to their clients.

  • Benefits of breastfeeding

CHW Supervisory Webinar: Community Needs Assessment

Each Community Health Worker program has the responsibility to identify and provide case management services to vulnerable pregnant women in their communities. This can be an overwhelming task. This webinar was designed to examine the following issues:

  • How does the CHW coordinator utilize community-based data to ensure that the highest risk women are targeted for services?
  • What are the strategies and outreach plans that will engage and recruit this population?

Supporting Breastfeeding

Participants engaged in interactive discussions about the benefits of breastfeeding, common challenges to breastfeeding, and resources available to support CHWs and breastfeeding moms. Participants also learned tips and key messages to share with pregnant and breastfeeding moms, including the ability to:

  • Identify five benefits to breastfeeding
  • List strategies to maximize successful breastfeeding
  • Name three resources for additional information on breastfeeding

Nutrition During Pregnancy

Participants engaged in interactive discussions about pregnancy and diet, weight gain, important nutrients to consume during pregnancy, as well as what foods to avoid. Participants also learned tips and key messages to share with pregnant and breastfeeding moms, including the ability to:

  • Identify key nutrients to consume during pregnancy
  • List foods to avoid during pregnancy
  • Discuss suggested weight gain guidance with CHW clients
  • Name three resources for additional information on pregnancy and nutrition
