“Taking Care of Ourselves: PWHAs Helping PWHAs Address and Maintain Mental Health” is a one-day forum for people living with HIV/AIDS (PWHAs). This forum is designed to promote understanding and conversation about mental health issues: What are they? Why are they so important for PWHAs? What kinds of treatments are available and how are they different? The goal of this forum is to increase awareness of mental health issues as they relate to PWHAs and to help enable PWHAs to access care.

FORUM TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • Mental health and the body's immune system

  • Managing mental health issues to ensure positive treatment outcomes

  • Helping PWHAs access mental health services

  • The important role of family and loved ones in mental health

  • Shopping for mental health services: knowing how to ask the right questions

The forum will be co-facilitated by a mental health professional and a peer (HIV+) trainer from the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) at CAI.  The forum is open to anyone living with HIV.

Note:  Light breakfast, lunch, and transportation assistance will be provided.

Providers:

“Taking Care: Helping PWHAs Address and Maintain Mental Health” is a half-day forum for clinical and non-clinical health and human service providers.  The overall goal of this forum is to build local capacity to provide mental health treatment and services to PWHAs.  The forum is designed to increase awareness, communication and collaboration among providers in the region on mental health needs and service referrals for people living with HIV/AIDS (PWHAs). Participants will discuss topics specific to their regions, and will include exploring the local needs and referrals, as well as local successes and challenges in meeting the mental health needs of PWHAs. Participants will explore ways to work together to help PWHAs access mental health services through forming multidisciplinary teams and developing communication networks.

FORUM TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • Importance of mental health for PWHAs
  • Overview of common mental health issues and concerns for PWHAs
  • Explore local needs and referrals, and address needed referrals that are not available
  • Discuss successes and challenges in managing HIV, mental health and substance abuse issues
  • Availability of AIDS Institute-funded mental health services in the region
  • Forming multidisciplinary teams and developing communication networks to strengthen the ability of providers to serve PWHAs and their families

The forum will be co-facilitated by a trainer from the PWA Leadership Training Institute (LTI) and a mental health professional in local practice. The forum is open to all clinical and non-clinical health and human service providers who serve PWHAs.

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe 3 reasons mental health care is important for PWHAs
  • Discuss the role of clinical and non-clinical health and human service providers in managing clients’ mental health issues
  • Describe how to work with other providers to develop multidisciplinary treatment teams
  • Identify at least 3 mental health resources in the region to which PWHAs can be referred

Approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the training program participants will participate in a follow-up conference call to discuss successes, ongoing challenges, and ways to address challenges and build on successes.
