Who Should Attend These Trainings

The primary target audience for these trainings are mental health professionals  licensed by the New York State Department of Education and the Board of Regents to practice within the boundaries and scope of their respective profession. Preference is given to licensed clinicians working in Ryan White Part B funded agencies.
 

Continuing Education Units

Community Psychoeducation Forums for

Consumers and Providers

Consumer Forums: These forums are open to anyone living with HIV. Lunch will be served at 12:30pm. Limited transportation assistance will be available. Please register in advance for these programs.

Understand your Medications For PWHA Consumers

This interactive half-day forum will provide consumers with important information about some of the common psychotropic medications prescribed to treat individuals with HIV/AIDS who are diagnosed with mental health disorders. Prescribers will present the main uses of medications, common side effects, and possible interactions with medications consumers might be taking for other chronic health issues such as HIV and diabetes. Issues related to medication adherence will be discussed.

Participants will be able to:
• Be familiar with basic information regarding the purpose of some common general psychotropic medications
• Recognize the importance of medication adherence
• Be informed of local resources that can help them with questions regarding their medications

Aging Positively: Growing Old with HIV For PWHA Consumers

This half-day forum will familiarize consumers with the health and mental health concerns related to aging and HIV. We will describe the recent research on the impact of chronic inflammation and long-term viral infection on aging. Local providers will discuss community resources that can support consumers and will describe positive behavior changes that consumers can implement with minimal to moderate effort that can reduce their risk for developing chronic health problems, improve quality of life, and in some cases, extend their lives.

Participants will be able to:
• Describe the impact of aging on physical and mental health
• Examine ways that HIV infection may affect physical and mental health concerns related to aging
• Identify positive behavior changes that can improve quality of life and reduce risk for some physical and mental health-related conditions

Provider Forums: These forums are for any provider in New York involved in the healthcare of PWHAs including mental health professionals, primary care professionals, substance abuse counselors, case workers, etc. Please register in advance for these programs.

Helping your Clients Understand their Medications
For Health and Human Services Providers

This interactive half-day forum will provide mental health practitioners with important information about some of the common psychotropic medications prescribed to treat individuals with HIV/AIDS who are diagnosed with mental health disorders. Prescribers will present the main uses of medications, common side effects, and possible interactions with medications consumers might be taking for other chronic health issues such as HIV and diabetes. Issues related to medication adherence will be discussed as well as the role of mental health practitioners as helpful resources to their consumers around medication issues.

Participants will be able to:
• Be familiar with basic information regarding the purpose of some common general psychotropic medications
• Recognize the importance of medication adherence for consumers
• Be informed of local resources they can direct consumers to in order to help them with questions regarding their medications
